Goatacre CC Weekly News Update
Finally the weather relented for the weekend and some (not all) cricket was played.
In adult cricket the 1st team’s new Premier 2 adventure got underway on Saturday with a 50 run win at home to Westbury - a fairly good crowd and a great result!! Unfortunately the 2nds were soundly beaten in their 1st game of the season at Westbury having looked very rusty with the bat, and the 3rds were called off due to the midweek rain. The 4th team didn't have a fixture and the Purton pulled out of the National Village Cup game (giving us a walkover to the next round).
In junior cricket, the Under 13’s played their first game of the season, having had 2 games rained off already, and impressed in winning a very tight game against Calne – and going top of the table!!
The 1st team lost the toss and were unsurprisingly asked to bat on a very soft and wet wicket. However, Kilbee(39) and Pocock(47) got us off to a great start by putting on 65 for the 1st wicket. After a mid order collapse that saw us fall to 108 for 7 some late battling from Iles (12), Parish (42) and House (13) saw us get to a respectable 178 all out. We knew we had to bowl and field well to win the game and that is exactly what we did. All the bowlers bowled well, we held our catches and added to it with 2 superb run outs (1 each for Haines and Jif Wilkins), the result would have been more comprehensive but for some late hitting by their number 9 who took advantage of our much maligned (when we’re batting) small boundaries to make a very quick 48. The pick of the bowling figures was Edwards with 3 for 19 and Haines with 3 for 20.
The 2nd team were bowled out for 95, with only 4 players double figures and 4 players getting ducks! Unfortunately Westbury found things a little easier and knocked off the runs required for the loss of 4 wickets in the 16th over. However, with no warm up games and limited practice due to the weather there is an excuse – this week only!!
Purton couldn’t raise a team for the Yorkshire Tea Village Cup game – this means we have received a walkover to the next round where we now travel to Redlynch this Sunday (20th).
The Under 13’s under the new management of Eddie Jenkinson secured a win in their first game of the season and have immediately gone to the top of the WYCL table. Reluctantly batting 1st we posted a challenging total of 103 all out using 28 of our 35 overs – Dan Smart top scored with 36, closely followed by Toby Iles with 25. the bowlers then took over and dismissed Calne for 87, Sam Hilton leaning the way with 3 for 12. Congratulations boys and girls – a fantastic start!
This week sees lots of games (weather permitting) – the Under 15’s host Marlborough in the National Cup (Tuesday 6pm), the midweek team travel to Beanacre (Wednesday 6pm), the Under 13’s travel to Devizes (Thursday 6pm), then Saturday sees the 1st team at Chippenham (1pm), the 2nds hosting Wootten Bassett (1.30pm), the 3rds hosting Potterne 4ths (2pm) and the 4ths travelling to Calne 3rds (2pm). Sunday then sees the National Village Cup game at Redlynch (2pm) and the Under 13’s travelling to Purton (2pm).
Hopefully the weather holds and people can get to play and watch plenty of cricket this week.
